Sports partnership launches unique holiday sport programme for Chesterfield kids - 21st Feb 2011
A new Chesterfield sports partnership launched for the half term holidays is already bursting at the seams after children from across the area jumped at the chance to try a host of new sporting experiences.
The UK's largest kids' sports coaching organisation Premier Sport has joined forces with Chesterfield Borough Council's Healthy Living Centre in Staveley in a bid to get local children more active.
The two day half term event which caters for up to 60 children a day is already fully booked – and activities on offer include dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, dodgeball, Pirates play area, climbing wall, swimming activities, indoor athletics, Nintendo wii (sport), arts and crafts and problem solving activities.
Children aged 5 to 12 years will be participating in the activity days on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 February, many of who are pupils at local schools including Barborough Primary, Brimington Junior, Brimington Manor Infants, Henry Bradley, Woodthorpe CofE Primary and Staveley Junior Schools.
Premier Sport - dedicated to developing innovative sports coaching which will help children to live a healthy life, and successfully delivering coaching to more than 125,000 children every week – is backed by big-named sporting ambassadors including rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio, Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew and former rugby league champion Paul Sculthorpe
The company was approached by the Healthy Living Centre to help encourage more local children to get active using their facilities.
Premier Sport is providing eight coaches, including a life guard, and will be running all activities with the exception of the climbing wall, which will be staffed by a Premier coach as well as the centre's head climbing wall instructor.
The activity days run from 9.30am until 3.30pm with an extra time option available to suit working parents.
Daniel Harris, Premier Sport Area Co-ordinater said: "We were approached by the Healthy Living Centre to see what we could do to encourage more children to use the centre, and I am delighted to be working with them to provide activities during the February half term holidays.
"We have been able to put an exciting, unique programme together. Getting children interested in keeping fit and healthy at an early age will hopefully keep them that way when they grow up."
Premier Sport has also added a cheerleading class to the centre's Saturday morning timetable.
Leisure Centre Manager, Lee Allcock, added: "We have some of the best facilities in the area for young people at the Healthy Living Centre so we're delighted that so many are taking up the half term activities."
