Young coach launches own business in a bid to inspire the next generation - 12th Mar 2010
Former Torbay student and sports coach Georgina McKimm has started her own business in a bid to inspire today's children with a passion for fitness.
The 24-year-old, who completed a Coach and Physical Education degree at Marjon University, has taken on her own franchise under the wing of the UK's biggest coaching company, Premier Sport.
Premier Sport is dedicated to developing innovative sports coaching which will help children to live a healthy, fit life, and successfully delivers coaching to more than 125,000 children every week.
The company is backed by big-named sporting ambassadors including rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio, Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew and former rugby league champion Paul Sculthorpe.
Georgina, who grew up in Torbay and has been working as a coach for Premier Sport for a year in Brighton, will be working across the area delivering breakfast, lunch and after school clubs in up to 21 sports as well as curricular time coaching in PE lessons.
She has already been signed up to deliver a tag rugby club at her old primary school, Homelands, in Torquay from April, where she will also be teaching curricular time tag rugby for the Year 5's.
The former chef also has a keen interest in healthy eating, and is keen to promote a healthy living message across the community.
"Premier Sport is the best outlet for delivering quality sport to children, as well as having a really good business model," said Georgina, who used to play football for Torbay ladies.
"When I was at primary school there were hardly any sports on offer, and I want today's children to have opportunities that I didn't. I wanted to follow my passion – which is to keep kids healthy and stave off the looming obesity crisis."
She is already qualified to deliver a range of sports including dance, cheerleading, basketball, dodgeball, athletics, gymnastics and multisports.
Georgina will now focus on getting a team of coaches together to offer PE coaching both in and out of school hours as well as Chewits holiday camps with her team of coaches under the Premier Sport umbrella in the Torbay and South Hams areas.
